2. FEELING: The Means of Communication
IF YOU WANT TO TRULY communicate to others, then before you speak, ask yourself:
How do I want them to feel about themselves when I talk to them?
One of the most inspiring speakers I know of is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I have studied his speeches for years, trying to glean a bit of what made him so effective, but it wasn’t until I saw a documentary film about Malcolm X that I had an insight that gave me something new to consider regarding my own effectiveness as a speaker.
When Malcolm X spoke to African Americans, he addressed them as victims. He took every opportunity to remind them how they had been victimized by whites. He did this, I think, in order to move them to action. He wanted them to be angry about the way they were being treated so they would take justice into their own hands. He certainly had legitimate reasons to oppose the way blacks were being persecuted in America. However, I don’t feel that he was effective in bringing about an enduring positive transformation, because he perceived himself and his audience as victims.
King had a different approach. He did not see African Americans as victims. He saw them as strong, whole, and complete. He didn’t have time for hate, recognizing it as something that would slow him down on his way to his goal of racial equality. As he said, “I have decided to go with love. Hate is just too heavy a burden to bear.” King envisioned a new world in which all people lived together in harmony, and he spoke from that elevated dream. Black people who heard him felt themselves to be strong, whole, and complete, empowered with vision and hope to take their rightful place in society rather than remain victims of an unjust racist system.
Only through humility and respect will you be effective in communicating. When conveying the messages of yoga and veganism to others, it is important you do not make them feel condemned or judged, but empowered to make conscious choices that would lead to liberation.
